Memories of the Great Depression

Library Meeting Rooms, Thursday, May 25, 2023 at 6:30pm

The Story of an America that no longer exists. What was it like to live in America 90 years ago? Have you ever needed to use an outhouse at two in the morning? Bathed in a corrugated metal tub with water heated on a wood-burning stove? Read at night by kerosene lamp? Author John Donald O’Shea has collected stories from across the United States about these times and will share them with you.

John Donald O’Shea is a retired Circuit Judge. He has been active in community theater for over 50 years, as an actor, singer, and director. He writes op eds for three Quad City newspapers. He is currently working on his third book about the Great Depression.

Have you switched to Libby yet?

For Moline Public Library patrons who were using OverDrive to access ebooks and anyone else that is interested in trying out our collection of ematerials:

You may have already noticed but, as of May 1, 2023, the OverDrive app was discontinued. We encourage you to make the switch to Libby, the newer reading app. Libby is made by the same people, connecting you to your same library and to your favorite books, audiobooks, and magazines.

Download Libby or visit libbyapp.com to get started.

Why switch to Libby?

The Libby app was launched in 2017, with the goal of creating a simple and intuitive library app that builds on the core experience from the OverDrive app. The developers had been reviewing what was working with the OverDrive app and what could be improved and created Libby based upon what they had seen. Initially, they didn’t want to interrupt the experience for users, so the two apps were both available.

But now, thanks to feedback from librarians and readers, Libby is now a great app for everyone and there’s no longer a reason to have two apps that do the same thing. If you’ve enjoyed using the OverDrive app, you’ll love Libby.

Warsaw Ghetto Uprising: The 80th Year Anniversary

Library Meeting Rooms, Wednesday, May 10, 2023 from 6:30pm

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising lasted from April 19 to May 16, 1943. It was the first urban rebellion against Nazi Germany in the occupied territories. This striking and important event has to be put in the context of Nazi Germany’s desire for the total extermination of all the Jews in Europe. That intention was being carried out intensively. The remaining Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto were not about to be slaughtered without as much resistance as they could muster. This presentation will focus on what they did and why. It is their story.

Arthur Pitz, Ph.D. (history) is a Faculty Emeritus and Adjunct at Black Hawk College; and, a Fulbright Specialist.  He has given many public presentations over the years on multiple topics in the U.S. and overseas.  He has been studying and teaching on the Shoah (Holocaust), the Modern Middle East, and American History for many years.  He and Suzanne, his wife for 54 years, have been of service to their communities in their former home in Moline; and, now in Elmhurst, Illinois.
